Congress approaches EC over EVMs, demands tight security in Amethi

Congress delegation comprising of senior party leaders, Ahmed Patel and Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday requested Election Commission of India (ECI) to safeguard the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by providing details of each EVM in advance.

New Delhi: Congress delegation comprising of senior party leaders, Ahmed Patel and Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) with concerns related to EVMs during the LS voting. They urged the EC to safeguard Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by providing details of each EVM to be used in advance.

The Congress leaders also urged EC to provide information on the number of machines being assigned to each polling booths. While addressing the media here, Congress leader, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "We have also requested the Election Commission to provide the number of faulty machines to the political parties in order to maintain transparency."He further requested the EC may provide information on faulty machines replaced with new ones. In addition, when a new machine is brought midway, then details of the trials (if any) on the machine should be provided too.Abhishek Manu Singhvi said we have also urged the EC to increase the number of BDOs, in Uttar Pradesh's high-profile constituency, Amethi from where Congress Cheif, Rahul Gandhi is contesting. "We have demanded to place special observers in every booth and deploy security forces to avoid any criminal activity during the polling in Amethi," he added.Rahul Gandhi has won from Amethi in the year 2004, 2009 and 2014. However, this time he is contesting against BJP candidate Smriti Irani.Amethi will go to polls on May 6.

Intro:New Delhi: Congress delegation comprising senior party leader Ahmed Patel and Abhishek Manu Singhvi today requested Election Commission of India (ECI) that it is important to safeguard the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and details of each EVM be provided well in advance including the number of the machine and the polling booth to which it is assigned.

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi while talking to media said, "we have also requested the Election Commission that in the case of machines that have been found to be faulty for those that have malfunctioned the number may be provided to all parties in the interest of transparency."




Body:He further requested the Election Commission that when a faulty machine is replaced with a new machine, the number of the new machine may also be provided along with other relevant details. In addition, when a new machine is brought in mid way then details as to number of mock trials the machine has been through (if any) should also be provided.


Conclusion:Abhishek Manu Singhvi said we have also urged the election commission to increase the number of BDOs in the high-profile constituency Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi is contesting for the Congress. "We have demanded to place the special observers in every booth and deploy more number of security forces to avoid any criminal activity or illegal during the polling in Amethi," he added.

Rahul Gandhi has won from Amethi in 2004, 2009 and 2014 and this time he is being challenged by BJP candidate Smriti Irani. Amethi will go to polls on May 6.
