New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday informed the Supreme Court about its decision on the cancellation of the pending board examination for class 10 and 12 which was scheduled for 1-15 July.

According to reports, the apex court has asked the board to allot marks for remaining papers on basis of their internal assessment. The performance in practicals and examinations they took in March will also be taken into consideration as the exams slated to be held from July 1 stand cancelled across the country.

ICSE board also cancelled class 10 and 12 board exams. However, students not given option to write exam later.

The apex court had questioned the government whether the decision to conduct exams at a later stage will be taken by state or the central government, as the COVID-19 situation varies across states.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that decision will be taken at centre level only.

The top court was also informed that the students will have the liberty to opt either for the examinations, to be conducted later, or go with the assessment process based on past performance.

The CBSE will have to come up with a fresh notification to clarify the options given to students including the internal assessment criteria.

The top court was hearing a plea, filed by some parents of the students appearing for the exam, seeking a direction to the CBSE to declare the results on the basis of exam already conducted and to calculate it on an average basis with internal assessment marks of remaining subjects.

The plea has also sought quashing of the May 18 notification of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) by which the date sheet for remaining exams of Class XII was declared.
