Aizawl (Mizoram): Mizoram Governor, the Hon’ble P.S. Sreedharan Pillai has invited B. Sangkhumi, a renowned social activist for the cause of women empowerment in Mizoram to the Raj Bhavan and felicitated her with Letter of Appreciation for her unique achievement.
B. Sangkhumi will be conferred with Padma Shree Award by the President of India around March/April this year along with the others whose names had been approved for conferment of 119 Padma Awards 2021, one of the highest civilian awards in India.
Governor Pillai, in his interaction with B. Sangkhumi, a new recipient of Padma Shree from Mizoram congratulated the latter for getting her works recognised and appreciated at the highest level.
The Governor also expressed his deep appreciation of the pioneering works done by her and all her activists friends in the fight against women empowerment in the Mizo society. In light of the achievement of his guest, he also said that dedication and service to the public are appreciated everywhere. And that service to society is no less than a service to God.
On accepting the felicitation by Governor, B. Sangkhumi had expressed her gratitude for getting acknowledgement from the Head of state on her achievement. And thanked everyone who had joined her in the social cause to fight for improving the status of women in Mizoram.
During her conversation with the Hon’ble Governor, she had also briefly detailed account of what had been miserable plights of the women in Mizo society and why they were fighting against it.
Also, while expressing her desire for more improvements she had admitted that the status of women in Mizo society is much better now in comparison to how women were treated in the Mizo society in olden days.
B. Sangkhumi is a former public servant who went on to lead the largest women federation and a pressure group in Mizoram, Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), in different capacities for a considerably long period of time. She had also been know for working in the Mizoram Public Service Commission (MPSC) for 9 years, first as Member and later on as Chairman. Prior to her stint in MPSC, she was Director, Higher & Technical Education in the Government of Mizoram.
