3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"It is true that China is a big country with growing influence, but we always adhere to the path of peaceful development, uphold the principle that the world is a big family where countries can live in peace with differences, and advocate equality and mutual respect. The growth of China's strength is the growth of peace forces, as well as the growth of international fairness and justice. We also noticed that there are many objectives and rational calls inside NATO who do not want to be hostile to China. In fact, the biggest threats and challenges facing the world today are unilateralism and bullying practices from which even U.S. allies have suffered a lot."

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"The U.S. side keeps chattering about security, but what exactly is the security standard? Who decides what is safe and what is the threat? If a country is both an athlete and a referee in terms of safety standards, and even frequently makes bad decisions, can it still be trusted? The so-called security trap alleged by the U.S. side appears to be compelling topic at first glance, but it is actually quite ridiculous."

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"Huawei has already openly stated that it is willing to sign backdoor-free agreements with relevant countries and is willing to accept third-party inspection and supervision. I wonder if the United States can make the same commitment? We believe that the countries concerned will bear in mind their own long-term interests, adhere to independent judgment, and adhere to the principles of fairness, just, and non-discrimination. They should have enough wisdom to avoid falling into the U.S. -made security trap."

9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"Both sides highly commended the overall conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiation and are willing to work with relevant countries to ensure that the agreement is formally signed next year. The two sides also agreed to continue to properly deal with issues affecting the sound development of China-ROK (Republic of Korea/South Korea) relations, such as the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment, and to respect each other's core interests and legitimate concerns in accordance with the consensus reached. The two sides reviewed the developments and changes in the situation on the Korean Peninsula since last year and agreed to advance the political settlement of the Peninsula issue in accordance with the 'dual-track approach'. China maintains that the important consensus reached at the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) -US meeting in Singapore should be effectively implemented, and that the legitimate concerns of the DPRK in terms of security and development should be taken seriously. The Security Council should initiate discussions on reversible provisions of relevant resolutions and ease sanctions on the DPRK with concrete actions in light of the development of the situation so as to encourage all parties to move forward in the direction of political settlement on the Peninsula issue."

STORYLINE:
China said its growing force is not a threat after NATO allies said they must address the "opportunities and challenges" posed by the rise of China.
NATO leaders issued a communique after a short summit near London underlining their commitment to defend each other in times of trouble.
China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news conference on Thursday that China has noticed there are calls inside NATO not to be hostile to China.
"The biggest threats and challenges facing the world today are unilateralism and bullying practices, from which even U.S. allies have suffered a lot," Hua said.
At the same news conference, Hua also refuted the statement of the U.S. State Department calling for other countries to be cautious when purchasing products made by China's tech giant Huawei so as not to fall into the alleged security traps of China.
"The so-called security trap alleged by the U.S. side appears to be compelling topic at first glance, but it is actually quite ridiculous," Hua said.
Huawei is asking a U.S. court to throw out a rule that bars phone carriers from using government money to buy its equipment on security grounds.
The case is Huawei's second legal challenge this year to U.S. government efforts to curtail its market access.
American authorities say Huawei is a security risk, which the company denies. Regulators barred rural phone carriers from using government subsidies to buy equipment from Huawei or its Chinese rival, ZTE.
"We believe that the countries concerned will bear in mind their own long-term interests, adhere to independent judgment, and adhere to the principles of fairness, just, and non-discrimination. They should have enough wisdom to avoid falling into the US-made security trap," Hua said.
Asked about the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to South Korea, Hua said the two sides were working together on the conclusion of a regional trade agreement and progress on the North Korea nuclear issue.
"China maintains that the important consensus reached at the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) -US. meeting in Singapore should be effectively implemented, and that the legitimate concerns of the DPRK in terms of security and development should be taken seriously," Hua said.
Wang and South Korean officials are likely to discuss details of a planned trilateral summit between Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo in China later this month. There could also be discussions about diplomacy with North Korea and a possible visit to South Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping next year.
