LEADIN:
A sailing boat powered by solar power alone is making waves in the French Riviera.
The entrepreneurs behind the project say the boat will be easily incorporated into smart-city planning at a near-zero cost.
STORYLINE:
A sun-powered aircraft named Solar Impulse made a world tour between 2015 and 2016, and Energy Observer, a renewable energy boat, is doing a similar voyage now.
Both projects inspired many entrepreneurs around the globe, including Philippe Marengo, the CEO and founder of Suncy Concept, a solar boat company based in Monaco.
A few years ago, Marengo was involved in the creation of airstrips and airline companies for tourist transfers to resorts on different islands.
He recognised a need for passenger sea transportation without fuel as it was difficult to provide fuel in those resorts.
That is how the idea of the Suncy solar boat was born.
Solar-powered boats are popular with early adopters and the project still needs to convince the large public, but the technology is expected to become popular in the future, as concerns about carbon emissions grow.
The project is supported by a MonacoTech startup who say that smart-city projects are contacting the company, with various cities around the world interested in solar boats for public transportation.
Hotels and resorts are also interested in the technology for tourist rides and transfers.
Today, a dozen completely autonomous boats are sailing in the Cote d'Azur.
Tourists are booking their silent, smell and fuel-free rides along the one of the most prestigious coastlines in the World.
"We have a boat that has a 2 kW engine with a powerful energy output which is the equivalent of six horsepower engine. For instance, at this moment, I am sailing using only 170 watts out of 2000 watts available. And with 160 watts I'm nearly (sailing) at the speed of 2 knots. What is stunning is that with 200 watt you can light one or two halogen (lightbulbs) and we are moving on a boat that can transport eight people with the same quantity of energy used to lightening a room. With this energy we couldn't even heat a glass of milk in a microwave," says Guillaume Jacquet-Legreze, Marengo's partner and the CEO and founder of Seazen, a company that uses Suncy solar boats for tourist tours.
The solar boat can be rented with or without a skipper.
In its standard version it sails at the speed of 5 kt (knots), but a customer could choose an electrical engine of 20 kW that could develop a speed of 15 kt.
The standard version of the boat will be sold at the price of around 70, 000€ and would be able to transport eight people.
"The utilisation, that is to say, the operating costs are zero, because we use solar energy, a real renewable energy. We don't need to plug in to the power plug in the harbour, even though we could do it. You have engine checks once per year, that will be 100€ for the check-up but there is nothing to maintain, there is no hydraulics, very few things to do," says Marengo.
A final version of the boat is scheduled for November.
It will have a trampoline (net like on a catamaran), and a living area with a bed and a shower.
