STORYLINE:
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday expressed confidence that the "diminishing of ties" between his country and Japan will be temporary.
Rouhani blamed the strain in the relationship on pressure from sanctions placed on the country by the US.
Japan, a country without energy sources, seeks interest in the Iranian oil but US sanctions have put a curb on crude purchases from Iran by Asian countries.
Rouhani was speaking in Tehran ahead of flying to Malaysia for a three-day visit to attend an Islamic countries' summit he is scheduled to address.
He will subsequently visit Japan on Friday for talks Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.
The visit will be a response to an official invitation by Abe who visited Tehran in June.
Japan, a U.S. ally that has traditionally had friendly relations with Iran, seeks to serve as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran.
Tensions have escalated between Tehran and Washington since U.S. President Donald Trump's decision last year to withdraw from Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
