"So the Manta5 Hydrofoiler XE-1 is the world's first Hydrofoil bike. It utilises e-bike technology to assist you as you are planing along the surface. And then underneath the water you've hydrofoils and a propeller which gives you the lift and thrust to be able to plane on the surface of the water. We set out to replicate the cycling experience on water and the XE-1 is our first version."

"So for the first five years of research and development it was all manual. But we wanted to extend the ride time and open the market to a wider pull of people. So our first product is XE-1 which allows for electric technology to be able to assist you as you are riding, very much like an e-bike."

"So, we have had an enormous amount of interest from around the world. We had one video that went viral on Facebook and got 350-million views. So we have actually have had interest from a whole bunch of different people. But typically it is someone that enjoys riding on the road, as well as water sports. We have had a lot of interest from the US, the UK and Europe as well as a whole bunch of other countries as well. So…"

"So, there is a bit of mastery involved to learning it. But we sort of enjoy that mastery. The first part to learn is around launching. So you can either launch from a beach. Or from a pontoon or the back of a boat. That's the easiest way to learn. Most people can get up within three or four turns. And then it is all about learning to be able to turn and carve up. And then the last one that you can learn, which is a bit more mastery, is to be able to relaunch from deep water. We call it a submerged launch. So, if you have fallen off in deep water you are actually able to come out of the water and get planing again."

A New Zealand company is showing off a new way to get moving on water, with the help of pedal power and an electric engine.
On display at the CES tech show in Vegas, the Manta5 Hydrofoiler XE-1 can reach speeds of 12 mph (20 kph) and has a battery that lasts for an hour of water cycling.
STORYLINE
We may never walk on water, but now we can cycle.
The Manta5 Hydrofoiler XE-1 has pedals, an electric engine and a battery, very much like an e-bike.
But it also has carbon fibre wings called foils, that allows the whole bike to plane on top of the water at a speed of up to 12 miles per hour (20 kilometres per hour).
"The Manta5 Hydrofoiler XE-1 is the world's first Hydrofoiler bike," says Greg Johnston, Manta5 CEO.
"It utilises e-bike technology to assist you as you are planing along the surface. And then underneath the water you've hydrofoils and a propeller which gives you the lift and thrust to be able to plane on the surface of the water. We set out to replicate the cycling experience on water and the XE-1 is our first version."
The 460-watt electric motor is powered by a battery that lasts for a full hour of water cycling.
The company decided to add the electric engine to allow people to use the bike for longer distances, for example from a yacht to the shore.
"So for the first five years of research and development it was all manual. But we wanted to extend the ride time and open the market to a wider pull of people. So our first product is XE-1 which allows for electric technology to be able to assist you as you are riding, very much like an e-bike," says Johnston.
The New Zealand based company was founded in 2011 and in 2017 unveiled its first prototype of a hydrofoil bike.
The video the company posted on Facebook went viral, creating a global demand for a finished product.
"So, we have had an enormous amount of interest from around the world. We had one video that went viral on Facebook and got 350-million views," says Johnston
"So we have actually have had interest from a whole bunch of different people. But typically it is someone that enjoys riding on the road, as well as water sports. We have had a lot of interest from the US, the UK and Europe as well as a whole bunch of other countries as well."
About 30 XE-1 bikes have been sold to early backers in New Zealand and the company is hoping to make the bike available globally in 2020.
It is currently available for pre-order for $7495 US dollars.
Johnston says most people can learn how to use it relatively quickly, a bit like learning to ride a bike on land.
CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, started Sunday 5th January 2020 in Las Vegas with two days of media previews.
The show floor opens Tuesday through Friday.
More than 170 000 people are expected to the annual show, held across a sprawling set of hotels and convention centres equivalent to more than 50 football fields.
