LEADIN:
The creators of a small avatar robot are hoping it will offer a solution to loneliness and isolation.
OriHime allows users, including those who are bedridden or have physical limitations, to experience more of the outside world from the comfort of their own home.
STORYLINE:
This little robot acts as the eyes of a young girl.
OriHime is a small, avatar-style robot created by Japanese company Ory Laboratory.
It is controlled by six-year old Yurina Furikawa, who is in her home in Japan's Yokohama city.
By using a smartphone or tablet, Yurina can access OriHime from anywhere in the world.
It allows her see though the robot's eyes and interact with those around it through both gestures and voice communication.
Founded in 2012 by Kentaro Yoshifuji, Ory Laboratory's goal is to bring together people affected by distance and to eliminate the feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Kentaro says the idea spawned from his own experiences.
When he was younger, he was sick and ended up missing a lot of school.
He found himself lonely and isolated.
"I started thinking, why do humans only have one body?" Kentaro says.
"If there was another I could use, then I could use that body to go to school. It was with these thoughts in mind that I first started developing OriHime."
Users of the robot are able to visit places and attend events that they may not otherwise be able to travel to, despite their physical limitations.
The technology can even be set up so the user can control their avatar using only their eyes.
The avatar also allows users to take a more active role by being able make gestures and speak with those around them, letting students participate in class for example.
For 6-year-old Yurina Furikawa and her mother, Ayako, OriHime has expanded her everyday experience.
Yurina was born with congenital myopathy, which is a neuromuscular disease that causes her muscles to be very weak.
"She can move her right arm like this, and she can also move her left leg, but only a little. Because it's difficult for her to breathe when she sits up, she spends most of her time like this, laying on the bed," Ayako says.
Yurina was able to use the avatar for the first time earlier this month to virtually attend a concert of one of her favourite pop bands in Yokohama with her aunt, Tomomi Nagasawa.
Yokohama is currently running a campaign called "Creative Inclusion", which is how OriHime was involved in the concert.
Kanako Momota, a member of pop group Momoiro Clover Z, says OriHime could also be used by older people, to attend events from the comfort of their own home.
Yurina enjoyed the concert, says her mum.
"Even though the robot is far away, for her, it really feels like she's there," Ayako says.
