LEADIN:
An augmented reality system is levelling out the playing field for disabled people, allowing those with mobility disabilities to enjoy a game of football with friends who have no disabilities at all.
The game means disabled people and able bodied people can actually experience a game together, and not be confined to watching it on a screen.
STORYLINE:
Darren Kreps enjoys playing sports with his younger brother, Bryan.
It's especially fun when the boys are on a level playing field.
That's the idea behind iGYM, this augmented reality system developed at the University of Michigan.
Bryan, who has a neuromuscular disorder, uses both a wheelchair and a walker to help him get around.
He can happily use either on this iGYM court.
The games are projected onto the floor and can be changed to include one like this which resembles a combination of soccer and air hockey.
When players enter the playing field, a circle appears around them. The circle can be expanded to strike virtual targets, such as a ball that players try to guide into their opponent's goal.
While Darren was able to move around the court on his feet, kicking to expand his circle and strike the virtual ball, Bryan presses a kick-button to widen the ring surrounding his wheelchair.
The creator of iGYM Roland Graf a professor at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design.
"It projects a large court onto a floor that is modelled after soccer or air hockey. And when players enter the play field, a circle appears around them that visualizes their peripersonal space boundaries. And this, what we call 'peripersonal circle,' can be expanded to strike a virtual target such as a disc on the floor," says Graf explaining the technology.
The technology is one of a kind.
"We have done pretty extensive research on this. Currently, there is nothing else like iGYM as most other accessible gaming technologies either limit it to small screens, or are developed for people with cognitive disabilities," says Graf.
It's a pleasure for the boys' parents to watch the interplay.
Their father Erik Kreps says: "We learn a little bit about the project each time that we've come, so it'll be neat to see where it goes."
Kreps jokes that soon his wife Sandy will be playing along.
"I can really see anybody playing it that wants to play," and he says: "Maybe you'll be next".
Sandy Kreps isn't convinced: "No," she says laughing.
But other children out on the court show it is a fun game to play.
Graf says it's vital for the game to be affordable and accessible.
"Our vision with the system is to make it as simple and affordable as possible, so it can be installed and switched on like any video projector, or light fixture in a school gym or community centre," he says.
Currently iGYM exists only as a research prototype.
Graf and his team are looking for partners to help bring their project to the market.
