Radioactive material used in making nuclear bomb seized near Calcutta Airport

On Thursday, the authorities in West Bengal seized radioactive material, used to manufacture nuclear bombs, from two people near the Kolkata International Airport. Officials claim that the seized material might be worth around Rs 4,250 crore.

Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police, on Thursday, recovered huge quantities of radioactive materials from near Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. CID sources said that the seized material was 'Californium Stone' used to manufacture nuclear bombs. Two residents of Hooghly have been taken into custody by the CID.

On being tipped off by sources, the CID officers arrested the two persons, identified as Sailen Karmakar and Asit Ghosh. A bag containing Californium stone was also recovered from them. The two arrested are now being questioned. The CID sleuths are trying to trace the reason why the stones were brought to Kolkata and how these items entered the city.

"We are also trying to identify the persons from whom the arrested duo received this Californium stone," said a CID official who did not wish to be named.

One gram of Californium Stone costs Rs 17 crore. Around 250 grams of that radioactive substance have been recovered from the two. CID officers claimed that the total cost of the items seized might be around Rs 4,250 crore.
