Uttarakhand Police to bid adieu to 303 rifles

Aiming at strengthening law and order and providing a more secure environment to people, the Uttarkhand government decided to equip its police with the modern rifles and that is the reason state police are finally bidding adieu to .303 Lee-Enfield rifles that have been used since independence. The state police will be finally equipped with modern weapons as .303 rifles are being replaced by INSAS and SLR.

Dehradun: After 150 years of its service, the Uttarakhand Police is finally bidding adieu to .303 Lee-Enfield rifles that have been used since independence.

With the view to equip the force with modern weapons, the Uttarakhand government is already in process of providing the state police with Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) and Self-Loading Rifles (SLR) rifles to the state police.

The state police will be finally equipped with modern weapons as .303 rifles are being replaced by INSAS and SLR.

Almost a century old, .303 rifles were manufactured in 1857 and were first introduced in 1914 during the first world war. Since then the rifle has accompanied jawans all along in all kinds of operation.

The .303 rifle is a bolt-action, magazine-fed, repeating rifle that can fire one shot at a time after which the barrel needs to be reloaded.

Uttarakhand Police to bid adieu to .303 rifles

The body of the rifle is made out of wood and hence handling them is cumbersome as compared to advanced weapons. The rifle was good as per the requirements of that time. The rifle which was extensively used in some of the prominent world wars has become obsolete because it requires a lot of maintenance and is prone to failure.

Aiming at strengthening law and order and providing a more secure environment to people, the Uttarkhand government decided to equip its police with the modern rifles. With criminals often managing to lay hands upon modern gadgets, the police personnel sometimes struggled with the rifles to keep pace.

DG law and order Ashok Kumar, said, "A team of five members has been constituted to make a detailed report on the matter. INSAS and SLR rifles have been introduced in the state to replace .303 rifles."

Uttarakhand Police to bid farewell to its “Dost” of 150 years

Dehradun: The three not three (303) rifle, which gained prominence and dominance during the British rule for its accuracy will soon be out of service from the Uttarakhand Police. The cops will be provided with INSAS rifle in place of these. Uttarakhand police took this call keeping in mind the need of the hour and technological enhancement.

303 rifle was not maintained as required

Experts say that that 303 rifle was not given the due maintenance and it is one of the main reason for the rifle getting obsolete. Since independence, 303 rifle is being used only by Indian police departments, whereas, the rifle has become ineffective in front of most of the advanced weapons. With this is mind, the Governemnt thought it to be wise to stop the use of this rifle.

British army first used the rifle
It is believed that the during the 1880 rule of the British empire, the 303 rifle came in the maximum use and prominence. During this time the rifle was used in many wars battles.

Played a vital role in both the World Wars

303 rifle made in 1857 was extensively used in the first and the second World Wars as well as the 1962 (Indo-China) and 1971 (India-Pakistan) war too. With he advancement of weaponary, the rifle lost its shine. Retired from he army decades ago, the rifle now was being used only for guard duty in the Police force. The rifle whose 90% of the body is made out of wood, is at most times, a difficult task for the cops to handle and carry. On the other hand, the police at times has also to deal with Moaists and terrorists. With this in view, the police also needs to have advanced weapons.

5 member team is doing preparations

DG, Law and Order, Ashok Kumar said that, to initiate this process a five member team has been constituted and the team is making a detailed report on the same. As per the DG, INSAS and ASLR rifles have been introduced in the state to replace 303 rifle’s. In view of this, the proposal to completely do away with 303 rifles is being considered.
