Chennai: Crowds thronged the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai to collect Remdesivir drug turning the facility into a possible super spreader of Covid-19.

Authorities have been selling the drug at the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) for weeks and shifted the venue to the stadium to manage the crowd.

Most of them at the stadium did not follow safety guidelines issued by the government as the police moved in to manage the situation. Many joined the queue the night before to ensure they get the drug.

A woman in the crowd said, "I am exhausted and not able to stand in the queue."

The drug is given to only 300 persons in a day but more than 1000 had assembled on Saturday.

Some staged a protest after people skipped the queue and made a dash for the counters.

“I am standing in the line since Friday night. My token number is 111. A group of people went straight to the counter this morning. There is no proper arrangement in the place and there is none to coordinate. This counter is worse than KMC," said Mahadev.

Remdesivir has been in high demand since India was hit by the second wave and the drug was approved for use in the treatment of Covid-19.

The demand also created a black market for Remdesivir and arrests were made for hoarding and selling fake vials of the drug across the country.
