J-K: Cloudburst hits base camp near Amarnath shrine

According to reports, a cloudburst has hit a base camp near the Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir. No loss of life has been reported so far. Two SDRF teams are currently present at the cave to tackle the situation and one additional team of SDRF has been deputed from Ganderbal.

Srinagar: Reports have emerged that a cloudburst has hit a base camp on Wednesday near the holy Amarnath shrine from Baltal side in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal. No casualty has been reported so far. According to reports, no pilgrims were present at the cave as the Amarnath pilgrimage for the general public has been cancelled this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A large volume of water rushed down from the mountains near the holy shrine of Amarnath after a cloudburst, said reports adding that two unoccupied tents suffered damaged in the incident. The Disaster Management Authority in Jammu and Kashmir also released a video of the incident.

Two State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams are currently present at the cave to tackle the situation. Meanwhile, one additional team of SDRF has been deputed from Ganderbal. The Jammu and Kashmir police have issued an advisory urging people residing near the holy cave to move to the higher plains for safety.

People are also requested to stay away from the Sindh river as there may be a sudden increase in the flow of water in the view of incessant rains and reported cloudburst, an official statement read.
