Bengaluru: Virat Kohli's Sunday night helped him breach the record for most Indian Premier League centuries ever surpassing Chris Gayle who has 6 tons. However, the Kohli-powered 197 runs on the board by Royal Challengers Bangalore was not enough to defend against Gujarat Titans, who won the play off berth defeating the home team.

In the second consecutive century, Kohli remained unbeaten 101 off 61 balls. It came with 14 boundaries of which one was a six. The strike rate was hovering around 165 per cent, in the match in which the Bangalore team was eliminated. Kohli has played 14 matches and has 639 runs with the highest score being the Sunday night knock. In the previous match, Kohli equalled Chris Gayle's most tons in IPL.

Kohli averages 53.25 and has an overall strike rate of few decimals short of 140 in the current season of IPL 2023. With two tons and six fifties, Kohli who has faced 457 balls have managed to hit 81 boundaries of which 16 were sixes. In his IPL career, Kohli has so far played 237 matches in IPL and has scored 7,263 runs with a top score of 113, averaging 37.25 and with a strike rate of 130 per cent under his belt. He has 50 fifties and seven tons. He has hit 643 boundaries excluding 234 sixes.

RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis acknowledged the contribution of Virat Kohli by terming it as "an unbelievable knock" on a wicket which was wet from the beginning. "Virat Kohli played an unbelievable knock... to give us a chance. Thought that was a good score. But Shubman Gill played incredibly well to take the game away from us," Du Plessis said.

He was also very disappointed with the team being eliminated before the playoffs. "Very disappointed not finishing on a good note. It was really wet in the second innings. It was wet in the first innings as well, but there wasn't a lot of grip in the second innings and also we had to change the ball quite a few times during the second innings," Du Plessis noted.
