Cricket World Cup 2023: Babar Azam gifts Pakistan jersey to Hyderabad groundstaff

Hyderabad: Pakistan skipper Babar Azam gifted a jersey to the groundsmen of Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Tuesday after scripting the biggest-ever successful run chase in Cricket World Cup history to beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets.

On Tuesday, after the match against Sri Lanka, captain Babar Azam and Co thanked each one of the ground staff of Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as it was their last day in Hyderabad. Pakistan captain gifted ground staff a Pakistan Cricket World Cup jersey. The Men in Green started their 2023 World Cup campaign in Hyderabad and won both the games, which were played in the city. It was at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium that the Pakistani players practiced before the tournament started after they landed in India after seven years.

Later, Pakistan pacers Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, and wicketkeeper-batter Muhammad Rizwan were also spotted taking group pictures with ground staff.

In the Pakistan versus Sri Lanka clash on Tuesday, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis's quick hundreds helped Sri Lanka record a significant total of 344/9 in their first innings. In reply to the chase, Pakistan lost two early wickets of Imam-ul-Haq and skipper Babar Azam in the first 10 overs. However, Muhammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique's centuries laid the groundwork with a 176-run third-wicket stand. Rizwan then romped his team home with 10 balls remaining. At one stage Pakistan was teetering at just 37/2 after eight overs. They won by six wickets.

The Pakistan team is yet to face a defeat at the ongoing Cricket World Cup, following their remarkable win over Sri Lanka on Tuesday. They had started their campaign with a win against the Netherlands.

Pakistan will now head to Ahmedabad for their much-anticipated match against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium on October 14. On a personal front, Babar Azam is struggling as he was able to score 10 against Sri Lanka and 5 against the Netherlands. Babar Azam will need to fire on all cylinders against the Men in Blue on Ahmedabad.
