US fumes as Turkey receives S-400 defence systems

Turkey's defence ministry confirmed the news saying that the S-400 air defence system arrived at an air base near Turkey's capital Ankara.

Hyderabad: Despite the US pressure, Turkey received the first set of Russian S-400 missile defence system on Friday.

Earlier, the US has warned Turkey of facing economic sanctions if it goes ahead with the purchase of the Russia-developed missile defence system.

Washington has also said Ankara won't to be allowed to participate in the programme to produce high-tech F-35 fighter jets.

The missile system comes up with multi-function radar, targeting system, autonomous detection, anti-aircraft missile system, launchers and control center.

It can fire three types of missiles to from layered defence.

The system can target aircraft, ballistic missile, cruise missile, unmanned aerial vehicles within a range of 400 km.

It can engage 36 targets simultaneously.

The missile system can be used by Air Force, Army and Navy.

Which other countries have S-400?

China is the first country to procure the missile system. In 2014, China had signed government-to-government deal with Russia to procure the advanced missile system.

In 2017, Turkey had signed an deal with Russia to buy the surface-to-air missile squadrons.

Qatar is in queue to buy the missile system as negotiation with Russia is on.
