The Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country, including Delhi, on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department in a statement said that the Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country on 13th July, against the normal date of 8th July.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that the Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country, including Delhi, on Tuesday. However, earlier IMD had predicted the arrival of monsoon in Delhi on the date of June 27.

"In association with the continued prevalence of moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal in the lower levels since past 4 days, enhanced cloud cover and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of the country including Delhi, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Thus, the Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country on 13th July, against the normal date of 8th July," IMD said in a statement.

Monsoon has arrived in Delhi 16 days after the usual date of June 27, which is the most delayed monsoon in the national capital in 19 years.

Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, also tweeted over the matter, "Finally Monsoon Rains over Delhi! Even though monsoon conditions were prevailing last 2-3 days, IMD was waiting for these rains to declare monsoon onset. Last 2 days it rained everywhere surrounding Delhi, except Delhi."

On Monday, IMD had issued a scientific clarification on the advancement of Southwest Monsoon, stating, "Such type of failure by numerical models in prediction of monsoon advance over Delhi is rare and uncommon."

Earlier, IMD had issued a yellow alert for the national capital for 5 days starting from July 10.
