Rahul Gandhi continues talks to resolve Punjab Congress crisis

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ramps up efforts to resolve feud within Punjab Congress as he met a number of party MLAs and MPs on Friday. This is the fourth time within a week when he called a meeting of Punjab Congress leaders at his residence.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ramps up efforts to resolve feud within Punjab Congress as he met a number of party MLAs and MPs, on Friday. This is the fourth time within a week when he called a meeting of Punjab Congress leaders at his residence. The leaders who reached Gandhi's residence to attend the meeting includes Rajya Sabha MP Shamsher Singh Dhillon, MLA Lakhvir Singh, Vijendra Singhla, Rana Gurjit Singh and others.

While speaking to the media, Dhillon confirmed that the meeting was held to resolve the feud within the congress. He said that the decisions were made to strengthen the party in the upcoming elections. He also criticised the leaders who switched the party before elections and blamed the defectors for the crisis within the party.

Earlier, on June 23 Rahul Gandhi met Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar, Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Singh Bajwa and state's Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal to know their opinions regarding the rift within the Punjab unit. After the meeting, Bajwa told the reporters that it was a thread-based discussion with Rahul Gandhi. He claimed that the ongoing crisis in the Punjab congress will be resolved within a week.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat, who is also a member of the AICC panel, constituted to resolve the feud, said that the report has been submitted to party high command and a reply is being expected by July 8-10. He also informed that the panel may also call Sidhu again for a meeting. Rahul Gandhi has been actively working behind the scenes to resolve the crisis. Meanwhile, the party high command has also asked Ambika Soni and Salman Khurshid for further consultations with the state leaders.
