Lockdown fear triggers migrant exodus from Bengaluru

Migrant workers in Bengaluru were seen leaving the city amid the fear of yet another lockdown in the Silicon City of India. The Karnataka government has imposed a night curfew in the state to contain the spread of the virus.

Bengaluru: With the Karnataka government announcing a night curfew in the state to control the spread of the pandemic, the exodus of migrants workers have once again begun. The decision of the BS Yeddyurappa government to impose a night curfew seems to have triggered a reverse migration of the workers amid fear of lockdown and labourers have started leaving the city.

Thousands of migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar were seen leaving the city with their luggage at Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna railway station.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike(BBMP) has appointed Marshals to ensure that people wear masks and follow social distancing norms.

Thousands of workers were unemployed in Bangalore when the lockdown was imposed last year.

However, the Karnataka government will decide on imposing further restrictions or continuing night curfew in Bengaluru after an all-party meeting of ministers with city MPs and MLAs today.

Karnataka saw 19,067 new coronavirus cases and 81 related deaths on Sunday, taking the gross to 11.61 lakh and toll to 13,351, the health department said. Bengaluru alone contributed 12,793 fresh infections and 60 deaths in the last 24 hours, the biggest ever on a single day.

Due to the spiralling infections for the past one month, the state has now 1,33,543 active cases including 620 in the ICU. According to the health bulletin, so far 10,14,152 patients have been discharged including 4,603 on Sunday. Mysuru emerged as another major hotspot after Bengaluru with 777 cases and three deaths.
