Andhra hospital develops bionic arms

Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD) Hospital in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh has developed bionic arms for the differently-abled people. The device cost Rs 2.75 lakhs while those made abroad are priced at a whopping 30 lakh rupees.

Tirupati: In a significant development, Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD) Hospital in the temple town of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh has come up with a unique limb facility of bionic arms. It is the first of its kind in the country and meant to create significant changes in the lives of many differently-abled people.

While this arm costs around a whopping Rs 30 lakhs in other countries, the hospital management claims that they have produced it at a low cost of Rs 2.75 lakhs only.

The hospital management said that the bionic arm would surely offer a new lease of life to many differently able persons. They would be able to avail it at Rs 2.75 lakhs while it would amount to Rs 30 lakhs abroad.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Chairman Y V Subba Reddy on Thursday launched this bionic arm through a video conference. Subba Reddy has appreciated the hospital and the scientists of Makers Hive Institution.

Doctors in the hospital have fixed the artificial limb on Gayathri hailing from Hyderabad for the first time. Doctors said that one would be able to lift even 18 kg objects. It comprises of 18 grips to catch hold of the objects easily, doctors added.

TTD CEO Basanth Kumar puts it that they are planning to implement a scheme to launch Life Donation and get some donations from people to help the needy get these limbs free of cost.
