"In Sydney, we put together a very ambitious work programme of between our defense departments. And so today we had a good opportunity to discuss progress of those various work plans. But we also had an opportunity to discuss shared deployments, the things that we're doing globally. But of course, in the Indo-Pacific as well.

"We did discuss today many of the work that we're doing together in the Indo-Pacific, and a number of the programs that we can now enhance. Of course, Australia enjoys a very close relationship with China in terms of our economic relationships. But, like with any country, we do expect all countries to accord with international law, and to do so peacefully. So we have discussed a number of things that we can do together in the Indo-Pacific. Again, it's not targeted at any one nation, but we do expect all nations to abide by international law."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Esper, Secretary of Defense
"And I would just echo that. You know, I see one of the biggest challenges they face in office is to implement our national defense strategy. Our national defense strategy emphasizes that our principal concern is the Indo-Pacific region and that in order to implement that, I need to engage more. I need to redeploy forces to the area. I need to be more present in the region as well. So the line of effort number two as we like to say in our strategy is to grow more partners and to strengthen our alliances. And this is a critical alliance to us. And so the more we can do that with other countries in the region, all the better for both of us."

(Reporter) "The president has said repeatedly over the last week or so that he wants to take the oil and keep the oil in Syria. Have you been given that as a military mission? And if so, how would that look? What does that look like? Can you do that without actually getting into some sort of form of combat with Russia and Syria? (Esper) The mission is, as as I've spoken to and I've conveyed it to the commander, and that is we will secure oilfields to deny their access to ISIS and other actors in the region and to ensure the SDF has continued access because those resources are important so that the SDF can can do its mission, what it needs to do in the region. (Reporter) He has said take it. (Esper) It's, you know, half dozen, six. I interpret that as deny ISIS access to the oilfields, secure them so that they are denied access to the oilfields."

STORYLINE:
U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper welcomed Australian Defense Minister Linda Reynolds to the Pentagon Thursday, where they discussed defense issues related to the Indo-Pacific region, including the South China Sea.
Territorial disputes in the South China Sea are expected to feature as a potential source of friction at the upcoming meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to be held in Thailand.
"Australia enjoys a very close relationship with China in terms of our economic relationships," said Reynolds.
"But, like with any country, we do expect all countries to accord with international law, and to do so peacefully," she said.
China and the five countries that have conflicting territorial claims over the South China Sea, including ASEAN members Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei, have been moving ahead in negotiations for a code of conduct aimed at reducing the potential for armed conflict.
The 10-member regional bloc has grappled repeatedly with forging a unified approach to the issue.
U.S. national security adviser Robert C. O'Brien and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will represent President Donald Trump at the ASEAN summit this weekend, the White House announced this week.
However, the decision to send O'Brien, who is a presidential adviser and not a member of Trump's Cabinet, is likely to be viewed in the region as sign of a lack of engagement at a time when China's influence and investments are quickly growing.
On another matter, Esper tried to clarify the president's claim to Syria's oil, which has added more complexity - as well as additional U.S. forces and time - to an American military mission he has twice declared he was ending so the troops could come home.
The military has acknowledged that an Army unit with armored vehicles, including Bradley infantry carriers, is now operating in the Deir el-Zour oil region.
Esper said that he interprets Trump's remarks about keeping Syria's oil as meaning that the extremists must be denied access to it.
"I interpret that as deny ISIS access to the oilfields, secure them so that they are denied access to the oilfields," he said.
