Calcutta High Court orders 2nd autopsy of slain West Bengal BJP leader

Justice Rajashekhar Mantha ordered a second post-mortem of the body to be conducted at the Command Hospital in Kolkata run by the Defence Ministry.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered a second autopsy report of BJP leader Bijay Krishna Bhuiyan, who was allegedly murdered by TMC workers in Moyna area of Purba Medinipur district two days ago, sources said. It is learnt that Justice Rajashekhar Mantha ordered a second post-mortem of the body to be conducted at the Command Hospital in Kolkata run by the Defence Ministry.

Justice Mantha directed a team be formed at the city-based Command Hospital for carrying out the second autopsy and a videography of the process be also carried out. Besides, two representatives of the family can also be present during the autopsy if they want, the Justice Mantha said. Justice Mantha has asked the authorities to submit the second post-mortem report of the slain BJP worker to the court on Monday.

Justice Mantha also directed to provide security to the victim's family and neighbours for the next one month. He also directed to add explosive recovery (NIA) and SC, ST atrocities Act to the FIR. Advocate Amitesh Banerjee on behalf of the state said that the incident is unfortunate adding a suo moto FIR was filed on Tuesday, May 2.

According to Banerjee, the the political parties are behaving irresponsibly and spreading tension in the area. He said that the state has no objection if the second autopsy is conducted at the Command Hospital. On the other hand, advocate Saurabh Chatterjee, representing the plaintiff, said that the victim's son has submitted in the High Court that on May 1, his father Bijay Krishna Bhuiyan, was abducted and beaten up in front of him and his mother.

Bhuiyan's body was recovered by the police at 12 am at a distance from his residence. "By 3 am, BJP workers mailed the SP and DM requesting not to do the post-mortem. Even then, the police did the post-mortem after 4 pm, which is illegal," the plaintiff said. Bijay Krishna Bhuiyan's neighbour Sanjay Tanti's lawyer Rajdeep Majumdar said that fear persists in the area for the last two years adding the police are hand in glove with the criminals.

The BJP leader's murder has led to a war of words between the ruling TMC and opposition BJP. The BJP has accused the TMC workers of murdering Bhuiyan while the TMC said that he was killed in a "dispute".
