Gorakhpur: Police on Wednesday arrested a youth for allegedly bludgeoning a college girl to death for resisting molestation attempt in a village in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh the preceding day, officials said. The accused identified as Saravan, has been booked under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and molestation, a police official said.
He said that the accused was arrested following a complaint by the slain girl's uncle in this regard. The alleged murder is said to have taken place on Tuesday evening in a village under Uruva police station area of Gorakhpur district. In his complaint, the uncle of the victim girl said that his niece was returning from college after her classes when the accused Saravan started molesting her near the village.

The girl resisted the molestation attempt and raised a hue and cry. Seeing the cries of the girl, her disabled uncle and her aunt rushed to the spot. However, accused Saravan also attacked the girl's uncle and beat him to pulp. Later, the accused hit the girl on her head with a pestle leaving her seriously injured. The girl was taken to the hospital in an injured condition, but she died on the way, an official said.
Soon after the incident, a team of police rushed the spot, however the accused had fled from the spot by then. A manhunt was launched to nab the accused while the body of the victim was sent for post-mortem. A case was registered against the accused under relevant section of law late on Tuesday night on the complaint of the student's family members.
SP South Arun Kumar Singh said that the accused was arrested in the case on Wednesday and is being interrogated in the case. Police arrested the accused from a boat in which he was hiding on the banks of the river in Saravan village. Police have also recovered the weapon from the accused used in the crime.
