Under the initiative, more than 3.15 lakh cows and buffaloes have been tagged till now with a unique 12-digit ID number. The tag records information such as the age, species and colour of the animal.

Alwar (Rajasthan): In a bid to put a check on cattle-smuggling, the State government has decided to tag the cattle with unique identification numbers.

Before tagging, the F-strain M. gallisepticum (FMG) vaccine is administered to the animals to reduce any chances of infections.

While tagging, the owner's information and details are recorded, as for the unclaimed animals, their location is being registered.

The process isn't new as even before, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department used to put tags on animals for easy identification and detailed treatments of sick bovine.

Tagging the animals would also help in tracing the lost, stolen or sick animals.

Alwar, the border district between Rajasthan-Haryana is infamous for cattle smuggling.

So far, more than 500 cases of cow smuggling have been reported in the district. Apart from this, dozens of people have been arrested by the police for smuggling and more than 10 mob lynching incidents have been reported due to the same.

Even now, the practice continues unabated with a third of all cattle smuggling cases recorded in Rajasthan being reported from here.

Cases of cow smuggling are reported daily in Bahrod, Thanagaji, Neemrana, Govindgarh, Bansur, Ramgarh Nauganwa area of Alwar. The smugglers sometimes also indulge in violence with the police, pelt stones and in worst case fire upon them when encountered.
