The gas leak took place at the Punjab Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (PACL) plant in Nangal city in Punjab.

Chandigarh: Several people including children were hospitalized after inhaling a suspected poisonous gas due to a leakage at the Punjab Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (PACL) plant in Nangal city in Punjab on Thursday, sources said. The condition of the victims is said to be stable while police have sealed the area as a precautionary measure.

The matter came to light after Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains about the incident. “There has been news of gas leakage in Nangal. Keeping in mind the precaution, all the ambulances of the district are being stationed at the incident site. I wish the health of all my city dwellers. No need to panic. I myself am reaching the spot soon,” Bains said.

The cause of the leakage was not immediately known. Reports said that locals complained of sore throat and headache due to the gas leakage. Scores of people including several school children at the Center Soldier Private School located in the vicinity have been affected due to the mishap. Soon after the incident, the locals rushed the victims to the Nangal Civil Hospital.

Some of the victims have been referred to PGI Chandigarh for specialized treatment. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains, DC Ropar, Preeti Yadav and SSP Viveksheel Soni besides top officials of the civil and police administration rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue operation. Reports said that soon after the incident was reported, the administration prioritized evacuating the children and staff at the Center Soldier Private School where over 2000 children are enrolled.

The Punjab Alkalies and Chemicals Limited is located on the Himachal-Punjab border which is over 50 km from the Ropar district headquarters. This is a developing story while more details are awaited.
