New Delhi: Amid nationwide outrage over the killing of pregnant elephant in Kerala, Congress General Secretary, KC Venugopal on Thursday, lashed out at BJP for adding 'communal color' to the incident, while demanding "unconditional public apology" from its leaders.

"The BJP must tender an unqualified and unconditional public apology for adding communal colour to the most unfortunate incident of killing of a pregnant elephant in Kerala," said Congress party leader.

His statement came in the wake of an incident that took place on May 27, in which the pregnant elephant died standing in river Velliyar, after it was fed firecracker-laden pineapple.

Reacting over the matter, BJP leader Maneka Gandhi questioned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for not taking any action in the matter.

Claiming that the incident took place in Palakkad district, Venugopal alleged that the BJP ministers and the "right wing" are relating the incident to Malappuram district.

Alleging that the saffron party is deliberately spreading false information on the unfortunate tragedy, "Without any connection whatsoever, they even dragged the name of Rahul Gandhi in this diabolic incident. This propaganda has proven once again that BJP will stoop to any level to twist the facts for their narrow divisive political purposes. They are shedding crocodile tears over the incident and this divisive propaganda has exposed BJP's hypocrisy totally."

By calling it the "most cruel" incident, Venugopal asserted, "It invited condemnation and criticism from across the world. Any kind of mindless and unreasonable violence against wildlife is totally unacceptable and unjustifiable."
