New Delhi: It's a historic day for Narendra Modi as he has become the longest-serving non-Congress prime minister and the fourth longest-serving overall.

The ruling BJP said in a tweet, "Today, PM Narendra Modi becomes the fourth longest-serving PM in the history of India! He now also holds the distinction of being the longest-serving non-Congress PM. Vajpayee ji served for 2,268 days, with all his terms put together. Today PM Modi has surpassed that duration".

Interacting with the ETV Bharat on the occasion, BJP spokesperson Sudesh Verma said Modi never worked to create records.

"He did not work to create records. They just happened," he said, adding that people love him as their leader and that is the main reason that he is creating more and more records.

"He would remain Prime Minister for the next 10 or more years. All records would be broken. It's our assessment and not just a wish," Verma said.

It seems people of India liked his leadership qualities as he was voted back to power in May last year with more Lok Sabha seats for his party.

Modi took oath as the 14th Prime Minister of the country on May 26, 2014. He started with his second innings as the Prime Minister again on May 30, 2019.

Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, all from the Congress, are the three longest-serving Indian prime minister in that order.

Jawaharlal Nehru remains the longest-serving prime minister of India so far. His tenure lasted for around 17 years, followed by his daughter Indira Gandhi who served two terms of little more 11 years. Dr Manmohan Singh served two consecutive terms of five years each.

The other non-Congress prime ministers who could not complete their tenure included Morarji Desai (March 24, 1977 -- July 28, 1979), Charan Singh (July 28, 1979 -- January 14, 1980), Vishwanath Pratap Singh (December 2, 1989 -- November 10, 1990), Chandra Shekhar (November 10, 1990 -- June 21, 1991), H.D. Deve Gowda (June 1, 1996 -- April 21, 1997) and Inder Kumar Gujral (April 21, 1997 -- March 19, 1998).
