Guwahati: Police on Saturday arrested a student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) on charges of raping a girl of the premier institute.
The arrested student has been identified as Utsab Kadam, a student of the Department of Chemistry, who hails from Mumbai.
Police officials said the accused allegedly raped the student on March 28 night when a cultural event organized as a part of the Holi celebration was going on.
After the girl was found in an unconscious state in her hostel room, she was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for medical examination by hostelites and staff.
Till the last report came in, the girl is being treated at the hospital and doctors are yet to say anything about her health.
A case (53/21) under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Amingaon police outpost against the accused student and he is being interrogated. Further investigation is underway, sources added.
