India's Elavenil Valarivan wins 10m Air Rifle Gold at ISSF World Cup in Rio de Janeiro

The 20-year-old shooter won the gold with 251.7 points, leaving behind Britain's Seonaid Mcintosh, who managed to win silver with  250.6 points. Ying-Shin Lin from Chinese Taipei won bronze along with one of the two Tokyo 2020 quota places on offer.

Rio de Janeiro: India's shooting wonder Elavenil Valarivan on Wednesday became only the third Indian shooter after Anjali Bhagwat and Apurvi Chandela to win the Gold medal at the senior ISSF World Cup in the 10m Air Rifle category in Rio de Janerio.

The 20-year-old shooter won the gold with 251.7 points, leaving behind Britain's Seonaid Mcintosh, who managed to win silver with 250.6 points. Ying-Shin Lin from Chinese Taipei won bronze along with one of the two Tokyo 2020 quota places on offer.

Meanwhile, the second quota was won by Iran.

The Tamil Nadu shooter had marginally missed out on a medal at the ISSF World Cup in Munich as she finished in the fourth position in the final.

Elavenil exceeds her senior fellow countrywoman Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela to win the Gold at Rio.

World number 2 Anjum Moudgil (166.8 points) came sixth at the event. Earlier, Apurvi Chandela closely failed to qualify for the final, she managed to finish at 11th place in the qualifying round. The world number two Anjum has already earned a quota for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Sports Authority of India congratulated Elavenil Valarivan for her achievement.

Valarivan and Moudgil had qualified for the final with scores 629.4 and 629.1 respectively. This win is Valarivan's maiden medal at the senior levels of the World Cup. She had earlier won gold medals at ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney and Suhl in 2018.
