Samjhauta blast case: Court defers hearing till March 14

The verdict in the 2007 Samjhauta Express blast, which killed 68 people, is likely to be pronounced today by a special NIA court. Aseemanand, a member of a right-wing Hindu group is the main accused in the case.

Panchkula: A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here is scheduled to pronounce the verdict in the 2007 Samjhauta Express blast case on Monday.

On February 18, 2007, an Improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the Samjhauta Express that connects India and Pakistan killed 68 people, mostly Pakistan nationals.

The NIA said in the charge sheet the explosion had targeted Pakistani Muslims.

The incident happened at Diwani village near the industrial town of Panipat, 160 kilometres from here, in Haryana, when it was heading towards Attari, the last station on the Indian side.

Out of the 68 people killed, 43 were Pakistan citizens, 10 Indian citizens and 15 unidentified people. 64 were civil passengers, while four were Railways officials.

12 people, 10 Pakistanis and two Indians were also injured in the terrorist attack. A number of train coaches were also burnt in the resultant fire.

Aseemanand, a member of the right-wing Hindu group Abhinav Bharat, was alleged to be involved in the bombing.

Lokesh Sharma, Sunil Joshi, Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra Kalasangra alias Ramji were also named in the charge sheet.

Panchkula (Haryana), Mar 11 (ANI): On February 18 in 2007, an Improvised explosive device (IED) blast was carried out in the Samjhauta Express, which runs between Delhi and Lahore at Panipat in Haryana. After a protracted in-camera trial involving four accused and a number of witnesses turning hostile, a Special NIA Court in Panchkula is all set to make its verdict today. According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the terror blast was carried out in pursuance to a criminal conspiracy aimed at threatening the unity, integrity, security and sovereignty of India. Total 68 people including 43 Pakistan citizens, 10 Indian citizens and 15 unidentified people were killed in the blast. 64 out of the total were killed, in which some were civil passengers and 4 were Railways officials. 12 people including 10 Pakistanis and two Indians were also injured in the terrorist attack. A number of train coaches were also burnt in the resultant fire.
