5.9 magnitude quake hits northeastern Japan, 3 people injured

Tokyo: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck northeastern Japan early Wednesday, leaving three people injured, Kyodo News reported.

However, there was no threat of a tsunami and no major property damage reported, according to the weather agency and local authorities.

The quake occurred at 2.46 am, logging upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Hashikami, Aomori Prefecture, with the focus in the Pacific Ocean off Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 56 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, the news agency reported.

Earlier, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake had occurred in Japan at 1:55 am (IST) on 21st September 2021, said National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at 1593 kilometres NE of Tokyo at a depth of 10 kilometres.

"Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.0, Occurred on 21-09-2021, 01:55:24 IST, Lat: 46.23 & Long: 152.56, Depth: 10 Km ,Location: 1593km NE of Tokyo, Japan," tweeted NCS.
