Eight arrested in WB for assaulting police during COVID-19 lockdown

A total of eight persons were arrested on charges of vandalism after they assaulted police personnel amid nationwide lockdown.

Jamuria: Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the assault of police personnel in the Churulia area of Jamuria in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district, a source said.

According to the reports, the police had come under stiff resistance from local residents yesterday when they went to ensure that some people of Jamuria are kept in quarantine in the Churulia school after they had returned from other states.

After receiving reports that local residents were protesting the move of using the school building for quarantine purposes, the police visited the place to ensure that quarantine protocols were followed.

Reportedly, the police personnel were attacked, their vehicle was vandalised and officer in-charge of Jamuria police station Subrata Ghosh was badly injured along with several other police personnel.

Later on a large contingent of police from the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate reached the spot. After tear gas shells were lobbed and police resorted to baton charge, the situation was brought under control.

Further, three people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident. Five others were arrested on Wednesday. A police picket has been posted at Churulia to ensure the law and order situation remains under check.
