Lakhimpur Kheri: Eight people were killed in the violence that erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri, Additional Superintendent of Police, Arun Kumar Singh told media on Sunday evening. Several farmers were injured in the alleged car runover incident.

The incident happened while anti-farm law protestors gathered in the area to take out a demonstration against UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya who was scheduled to visit Lakhimpur Keri.

Protesting farmers have alleged that Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Mishra’s son allegedly ran his car over anti-farm law protestors.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the clash which broke out in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday and has sent ADG Law and Order Prashant Kumar to Lakhimpur district to bring the situation under control.

The farmers demonstrating against the farm laws had planned to show black flags to the deputy chief minister. They had broken the hoardings installed to welcome the Dy CM and also captured the helipad readied for him in Tikonia.

During his visit, Dy CM had to inaugurate various development programmes including PWD Setu Corporation in Vandan garden.

Protesting farmers were also annoyed with Ajay Mishra for his statement against them at a meeting in Sampurna Nagar. The video of the meeting went viral on social media. In the video, the minister had stated that "those who are protesting should not only leave Palia but also have to vacate the district."

Reacting to the incident, former UP Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav lashed out at the ruling party. In a tweet, Yadav wrote "If this situation continues, then the BJP leaders will not be able to travel in car nor will able to get down from it,"

While Ghazipur Border Committee spokesperson Jagtar Singh Bajwa strongly condemned the incident but appealed to the farmers to maintain law and order.

He said, "farmers should maintain restrain and wait for the Samyukt Kisan Morcha's( SKM) decision over the incident. Their future strategy will be informed by the union. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace."

On Sunday evening, SKM has demanded that a case under Sec. 302 (murder) has to be registered immediately against Ashish Mishra Teni and others involved in the attack on farmers. They added that the Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra Teni should be dismissed immediately from the Central Government saying that it has to be remembered that just a few days back, he had issued a brazen threat to farmers.

SKM further demanded that the whole gory episode should be investigated by a sitting Judge of the Supreme Court.

The Morcha has also appealed the all farmers' organisations across the nation to protest at District Collector's/DM's/DC's offices in all districts between 12 noon and 1 pm on Monday seeking fulfilment of all the demands made by the Morcha.

Kisan Morcha also condemned the statements of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Reacting to the CM's statements abetting violence against peacefully protesting farmers, Kisan Morcha demanded an immediate apology from him and a resignation from the constitutional post that he holds.

Meanwhile, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait is also planning to visit the incident site. Tikait released a video on the matter stating that "I am leaving for Lakhimpur Kheri."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condole the incident saying that the sacrifices made by the farmers will not go in vain. Gandhi tweeted "those who are silent even after seeing this inhuman massacre, is already dead. We will not let this sacrifice go in vain - Kisan Satyagraha Zindabad!"

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi also expressed grief over the death of farmers in the clash and lashed out at the state government stating that the Kisan Satyagraha will be strengthened and the voice of the farmer will be louder.

"How much does BJP hate the farmers of the country? Don't they have a right to live? If they raise their voice, will you shoot them, trample them with a car? Enough. This is a country of farmers, not a fiefdom of BJP's brutal ideology. Kisan Satyagraha will be strengthened and the voice of the farmer will be louder," Priyanka Gandhi tweeted
