Mumbai: Shiv Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut lashed out at the BJP government and backed Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi stating that a glimpse of Indira Gandhi was seen in the young lady who hit the street for farmers.
In his weekly column Rokthok in party mouthpiece Saamana on Sunday, Raut referred to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s arrest at Sitarpur en route to meet the deceased of the Lakhimpur Kheri clash which claimed the lives of eight people including four farmers and a journalist.
The farmers were allegedly mowed down last Sunday by a cavalcade of three vehicles linked to Ashish Mishra, the son of Union minister of state for home Ajay Kumar Mishra.
Raut also said that former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was the only leader who could provide an alternative to the current dispensation in New Delhi.
The spokesperson said, "how Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi struggled to reach Lakhimpur Kheri reminds the leadership of Indira Gandhi. 44 years ago, Indira Gandhi was arrested on October 3, 1977. Police were taking her to Haryana from Delhi but due to the closure of the railway gate at Badkhal railway crossing, they halted there. Taking advantage of the situation Ms Gandhi jumped off the van and staged a protest on an under-construction bridge nearby. Later, she was supported by the party workers and her followers. Following the protest, police were compelled to present her before a magistrate and were released from that illegal custody."
