PMLA court cancels search warrant against Nirav Modi's brother-in-law Mainak Mehta

The search warrant against fugitive businessman Nirav Modi's brother-in-law Mainak Mehta was quashed by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act court on Tuesday. The court directed Mehta to furnish an amount of Rs 50,000.

Mumbai: The search warrant against against fugitive businessman Nirav Modi's brother-in-law Mainak Mehta was quashed by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act court on Tuesday. The court directed Mehta to furnish an amount of Rs 50,000.

Meha appeared before the PMLA court in connection with case against Nirav Modi and others. His lawyer said that he will appear before the Enforcement Directorate whenever as per requirement.

Mehta, a British national, is the husband of Nirav's sister Purvi Mehta. Reports said, the couple had turned approver and expressed willingness to appear as prosecution witnesses. The central agency had alleged that Nirav's financial fraud has links with Purvi's properties.

Earlier reports said, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, who fled India after allegedly defrauding the country's leading bank, Punjab National Bank, of Rs 15,423.39 crore, the bank, which was fined Rs 15,000 crore. Even after two and a half years, Punjab National Bank has not been able to recover a single rupee from both of them. The financial scam came to light in February 2018. Nirav Modi was declared a fugitive economic criminal from India. Interpol had issued a notice against him. He was charged in England.
