In a noble initiative to turn their village into a plastic-free Panchayat, around forty women of Perniad village in Kollam district of Kerala collects garbage from every household in the ward which is used for tarring roads.

Kollam(Kerala): Forty women of Perniad village here have embarked on a journey to turn their village into a plastic-free Panchayat.

The National Green Tribunal has chosen Perinad as an example of proper implementation of waste management laws and environmental protection measures. Perinad has given a lesson to the rest of the country on how to deal with the peril of plastic.

A group called the Haritha Karma Sena collects garbage from every household in the ward which is then taken to a processing unit for washing, cleaning and breaking it down into a powder.

The processed powder is then sent out from the processing unit to 'Clean Kerala Company' which uses it for tarring roads.

When we go to collect plastic waste from different households people clean them for us



Haritha Karma Sena then takes the waste with it and signs a card for the people 



Meanwhile, locals are very coopearative with Sena members

VO: Three women namely Vijayalakshmi, Ambili and Shirley head the processing unit at Haritha Karma that functions 24 hours-a-day.

VO: While the initiative of Haritha Karma is acclaimed and appreciated by many in Kerala, the neighbouring Panchayat of Perinad seeks its help in tackling its plastic waste.
