Shimla: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away in the early hours of Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 87.
As a mark of respect to former CM and Congress leader Virbhadra Singh, the Government of Himachal Pradesh has decided to observe three days of state mourning, from 8th - 10th July.
Singh was diagnosed with Covid-19 infection on April 13 and was taken to Max Hospital in Mohali.
President Kovind expressed condolences, saying that his political career spanning six decades in his roles as chief minister and parliamentarian was marked by his commitment to serve the people of Himachal Pradesh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to former Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh saying he had a long political career, with rich administrative and legislative experience. He played a pivotal role in Himachal Pradesh and served the people of the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed grief over the demise of Virbhadra Singh and expressed condolences to his family and supporters.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condoled the demises of the leader and tweeted "Deeply anguished by the demise of former CM of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Virbhadra Singh ji. He was a political stalwart and an able administrator who made noteworthy contributions to public life and welfare of the people. My condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti!"
Expressing sadness over the demise of Virbhadra Singh, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur announced 3-day mourning in the state, from 8th to 10th July.
Singh, who was a nine-time MLA and five-time member of Parliament, was Himachal Pradesh's chief minister for six terms.
