Assam government issues advisory, asks citizens to avoid going to Mizoram

Assam government has issued an advisory in the state, citing people not to travel to Mizoram as the situation on the borders continue to be volatile. The advisory mentioned the violent clash on 27 July, where six Assam Police officials lost their lives and several civilians were injured in indiscriminate firing.

The notice mentioned that certain Mizo civil society, students and youth organizations are constantly issuing provocative statements. The notice mentioned that it has been learnt from video footage available with Assam Police that several groups are armed with automatic weapons and other weapons.

Amid such a situation, the Assam government has advised people of the state not to cross the border and travel to Mizoram. Those people who are already in Assam must exercise utmost caution. Meanwhile, Mizoram Home Secretary Lalbiaksangi has informed the Ministry of Home Affairs that a large contingent of Assam police personnel is being mobilised at the Mizoram-Assam border.

Earlier, The Assam and Mizoram governments on Wednesday decided to withdraw the state police forces from the disputed border area following a meeting in the Union Home Ministry. Both the states also came to a consensus to bring peace in the conflict-prone inter-state border area. Following three back-to-back meetings between Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and his Assam counterpart Jishnu Barua, it was decided to deploy neutral forces (Central Armed Police Force) in the disturbed Assam-Mizoram border area along National Highway 306.
