Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh due to Cyclone Gulab

The Cyclonic storm Gulab, which was over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha, weakened into a deep depression at 2:30 am today over north Andhra Pradesh and is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards, weakening further into a depression during the next six hours.

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh): Cyclone Gulab is likely to move nearly westwards and weaken further into a depression during the next 12 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

"The deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh, lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of 27th September, likely to move nearly westwards and weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours," said IMD.

Earlier today, the landfall process of Cyclonic Storm 'Gulab' was completed.

"The landfall process has been completed. However, the system maintains its cyclonic storm intensity and is likely to move nearly westwards and weaken into a deep depression during the next four-five hours," IMD said.

The Cyclonic storm Gulab, which was over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha, weakened into a deep depression at 2:30 am today over north Andhra Pradesh and is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards, weakening further into a depression during the next six hours.

Due to turbulence in the sea on the account of the cyclonic storm, one fisherman from Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam died and one went missing after a boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday.

Various parts of the Srikakulam district continue to receive heavy rainfall due to the cyclone. Several roads are submerged, while trees and electricity poles are uprooted in some areas. The power supply is interrupted in most parts of the district.

The northern part of Andhra Pradesh is receiving heavy rains with winds blowing at a speed of 40-60 km per hour.

Vijayanagaram district has received an average of 18.6 cm of heavy rainfall, due to which canals and lakes were overflowing. Power poles and trees had collapsed in several areas creating severe power supply disruptions. An old day also died at Bodapalli Mandal when a wall fell on her.

Krishna district has received heavy to very heavy rains due to Gulab. Roads were flooded in several areas. Water has also reached inland areas in Vijayawada city. Gannavaram airport is also flooded, resulted in flights being unable to land.

Pendurthi Mandal of Visakhapatnam district faces a flood-like situation due to rainfall in wake of Cyclone Gulab. Water entered houses and fields were submerged. A woman also died due to a landslide.

Several parts of Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari districts have received heavy rainfall due to the cyclone. West Godavari district has received 9 cms of average rainfall. Fields and houses were submerged in many parts of the districts.
