Talks between the two clubs, police and local authorities ended in the agreement that Goodison Park will host the match instead of a neutral venue.

There had been fears that fans could congregate at the ground, with Southampton's St Mary's earmarked as a possible neutral venue for the fixture.

Liverpool will also be able to play home games at Anfield when the season restarts.

As late as yesterday Southampton’s St Mary’s stadium was still being suggested as a possible venue, though once the Merseyside police and then Liverpool council threw their weight behind keeping the game local most objections were overcome.

The mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson thanked both clubs for making it clear to supporters that their presence at or near the ground would not be welcome.

The Premier League will return after a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic on 17th June with Manchester City away at Arsenal.

Liverpool, who have not won the league since 1990, have nine matches of the season remaining and are 25 points ahead of City, having played one game more.
