Rape and murder of 9-year-old: SC Commission takes suo motu cognizance, POCSO invoked

On the recommendation of the commission, the Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act and POCSO Act was invoked in the matter. The District Magistrate was advised to release the compensation as per provisions of SC/ST POA rules 2016 (as amended), the NSCS said.

New Delhi: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Wednesday took sou-moto cognizance of the rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl at Shamshan ghat, old Nangal Raya in New Delhi, after which Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act and POCSO Act were invoked in the matter.

“On the direction of NCSC Chairman Vijay Sampla, a team of the commission headed by Vice-Chairman Arun Haldar, commission member Dr Anju Bala, Subhash Ramnath Pardhi, director and other senior officials went to spot to unearth more details,” said NCSC spokesperson.

The commission said that their team met the parents of the deceased child. One of the members of the deceased' family informed that a priest at the cremation ground coerced them to cremate her body, and her mother also alleged that she suspects her daughter was raped before being killed.

“Family of the deceased girl demanded action against the culprits. The Vice-Chairman assured the family that culprits will be punished at the earliest,” said the NCSC spokesperson.

After the meeting with parents, the team of the commission met DM, DCP (Southwest Delhi) and other senior officials of district administration. A meeting was also held with the Secretary, Department of SC/ST, Delhi Govt. The secretary assured that compensation will be provided to the family of the victim immediately as per rules.

A nine-year-old girl, resident of Delhi's Cantonment area, was allegedly raped and murdered on Sunday. The issue came to light after the minor girl was cremated without her parents' consent at Old Nangal crematorium after she was found dead there. A priest working at the crematorium, who had pressurized the family to perform the last rites of the dead body, had been charged with murder.
