FIR against 32 Tihar jail officials involved in helping ex-Unitech promoters

An FIR has been registered against the 32 Tihar jail officials who were helping ex-Unitech promoters, Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra. A probe by the Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana following SC's orders had revealed the fact that these officials had helped the duo in doing illegal work while in Tihar jail.

New Delhi (India): An FIR has been registered against the 32 Tihar jail officials who were helping ex-Unitech promoters, Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra. A probe by the Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana following SC's orders had revealed the fact that these officials had helped the duo in doing illegal work while in Tihar jail. The Delhi Police Crime Branch had registered the FIR under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Earlier, the Supreme Court having heard the matter had ordered a full-fledged probe and suspension of the jail officials for having helped the duo.

Speaking on the matter, the prison officials said that action is being taken in this regard on receipt of the letter from the Delhi Police. Already a letter has been dispatched to Tihar Jail and the Home Ministry for further action.

According to Delhi Police spokesperson Chinmoy Biswal, the case pertaining to the Chandra brothers was going on in the apex court and that during the hearing on August 26, the court had taken cognizance of the Enforcement Directorate's note.

It was then that the Supreme Court had ordered the transfer of Chandra brothers from Tihar Jail to Arthur Road Jail and Taloja Central Jail in Mumbai.

On September 28, the investigation report of this case was submitted to the Supreme Court by the Commissioner of Police. Thereafter, on October 6, SC had ordered that a case be registered and investigated. Therefore, on October 12, an FIR has been registered by the Crime Branch in this case.

Apart from the Prevention of Corruption Act, various sections of the IPC have also been added to the FIR and the investigation of the entire matter is being done by the Crime Branch.
