India-United States joint statement after US President's visit to India touched upon trade, defence, energy and security. The biggest takeaway from the just-concluded visit is the US reassurance on India's roles as a net provider of security in the Indian Ocean Region.

Hyderabad: The United states and India released a joint statement, after the conclusion of the state visit by US President Donald Trump, which signaled the emergence of a new vision of comprehensive global strategic partnership.

According to the release, the heads of both nations pledged to deepen defense and security cooperation, especially through greater maritime and space domain awareness and information sharing.

The US reaffirmed India's status as a major partner in defence, affording it the higher consideration for procurement and technology transfer purposes.

In order to strengthen internal security, both nations agreed to reinvigorate 'Homeland Security Dialogue', and establishment of a new counter-narcotics working group.

PM Modi and Donald Trump also agreed to conclude the ongoing negotiations which can become phase one of a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the just concluded visit is the reassurance from the US on India's roles as a net provider of security in the Indian Ocean Region.

"A close partnership between the United States and India is central to a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region," the statement read.

In the UN front, the United States reaffirmed its support for India's permanent membership bid in the UNSC and entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group without any delay.

"President Trump and Prime Minister Modi committed to working together to strengthen and reform the United Nations and other international organizations, and to ensure their integrity. President Trump reaffirmed the support of the United States for India’s permanent membership on a reformed UN Security Council," according to the statement.

"President Trump and Prime Minister Modi denounced any use of terrorist proxies and strongly condemned cross-border terrorism in all its forms. They call on Pakistan to ensure that no territory under its control is used to launch terrorist attacks, and to expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of such attacks, including 26/11 Mumbai and Pathankot," the statement read, holding Pakistan accountable for terrorism in India's neighbourhood.
