4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jacob Rees-Mogg, Conservative MP:
"Well it's trying to use the courts for political purposes which I think is a mistake and that allowing this prosecution to go ahead is politicising justice which is a further mistake. And we've just had an excellent set of Reith lectures from Jonathan Sumption (judge, author and historian) warning about overreach of the law into political matters and I think we should consider that very carefully. This is not a clever way to be proceeding. The law and politics need to be separate."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jacob Rees-Mogg, Conservative MP:
"The issue here is not whether the statement is inaccurate or not. The statement is clearly justifiable and always has been, and that is judgment for voters to make and for other parties to say I prefer the net figure rather than the gross figure. It is not a matter for courts to say one way or another. So politicising justice is a really bad idea and it's actually what happens in totalitarian regimes where people get prosecuted for free speech. So the issues of free speech completely overwhelm this bogus case brought by somebody who rejected the referendum result from the start."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jacob Rees-Mogg, Conservative MP:
"No, I don't think ti will make any difference to Boris' chances (of becoming the next Conservative leader) He is by far and away the best qualified, he can win votes in Labour London, he's a charismatic figure and he believes in leaving the European Union. People will recognise this for the foolish politicisation of the legal system that it is."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Boris Johnson, then-Mayor of London:
"I've decided after a huge amount of heartache because I did not want to do anything...the last thing I wanted was to go against (British Prime Minister) David Cameron or the government. But after a great deal of heartache, I don't think there is anything else I can do. I will be advocating 'Vote Leave' or whatever the team is called - I understand there are many of them - because I want a better deal for the people of this country."

STORYLINE:
A British judge ruled Wednesday that former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will be summoned to court over allegations that he lied and misled the public during the Brexit referendum campaign in 2016.
District Judge Margot Coleman said Johnson will answer questions about his possible misconduct in public office, when he claimed Britain contributed 350 million pounds (442 million US dollars) to the European Union each week.
Conservative Member of Parliament Jacob Rees-Mogg meanwhile told broadcaster ITN he believed the case was trying to use the courts for political purposes, adding "it's actually what happens in totalitarian regimes where people get prosecuted for free speech."
Johnson was a key figure in the "leave" campaign advocating a break with the EU.
The campaign emblazoned a bus with a promise that voting for Brexit would mean that instead of sending substantial money to the EU, the cash could be used to fund Britain's National Health Service.
Britain's statistics regulator has said Johnson's claim about the 350 million pounds was misleading and a "gross misuse of official statistics."
Lawyers representing Marcus Ball, an activist pursuing a private prosecution of Johnson, asked Westminster Magistrates' Court to summon the politician. Ball and his legal team assert that Johnson deliberately misled the public during the referendum and then in the general election of 2017.
The case comes at an awkward time for Johnson, a prominent contender in the Conservative Party leadership race who stands to become prime minister if he wins that contest.
Johnson has denied through his lawyers that he acted dishonestly.
Ball has raised more than 200,000 pounds by crowdfunding to pay for the private prosecution.
No date has yet been set for a hearing.
