नई दिल्ली : भारतीय पुरुष हॉकी टीम के कप्तान मनप्रीत सिंह और महिला टीम की कप्तान रानी रामपाल ने दिग्गज खिलाड़ी बलबीर सिंह सीनियर के निधन पर दुख व्यक्त करते हुए श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की है. बलबीर सिंह की 96 साल की उम्र में सोमवार को लंबी बीमारी के बाद निधन हो गया.
भारतीय पुरुष क्रिकेट टीम के कप्तान विराट कोहली, ओलंपिक स्वर्ण पदक विजेता निशानेबाज अभिनव बिंद्रा सहित कई भारतीय खिलाड़ियों ने दुख व्यक्त किया और हॉकी के दिग्गज बलबीर सिंह के निधन पर शोक व्यक्त किया.

मनप्रीत ने एक बयान में कहा, "ये हॉकी और हमारे देश के लिए काफी दुखद दिन है. सबसे सम्मानित, प्ररेणादायी और बेहतरीन इंसान ने आज हमारा साथ छोड़ दिया है. मैं उनके निधन पर बेहद दुखी हूं."
उन्होंने कहा, "मुझे याद है मैं जब भी उनसे मिलता था मेरे रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते थे. मैं हमेशा से उनकी तरह बनना चाहता था. भारतीय हॉकी में उनका योगदान हमेशा याद रखा जाएगा. भगवान उनकी आत्मा को शांति दे."
वहीं महिला टीम की कप्तान रानी ने उनकी उपलब्धियों को याद किया. रानी ने कहा, "मैं बड़े भारी दिल से महान बलबीर सिंह को याद कर रही हूं. तीन बार के ओलम्पिक पदक विजेता होने के साथ ही भारतीय हॉकी में उनका योगदान काफी शानदार रहा है सिर्फ मैदान पर ही नहीं बल्कि मैदान के बाहर ही."

उनके परिवार ने उनके निधन की जानकारी दी. बीते कुछ दिनों से उनकी तबीयत खराब चल रही थी. आठ मई को उन्हें तेज बुखार और सांस लेने में तकलीफ होने के कारण अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया था. उनका कोविड-19 का टेस्ट भी कराया गया थो जो निगेटिव आया था. बलबीर सिंह सीनियर 1948 के लंदन ओलंपिक, 1952 के हेलसिंकी ओलंपिक और 1956 के मेलबर्न ओलंपिक में स्वर्ण पदक जीतने वाली टीम के सदस्य थे. मेलबर्न ओलंपिक में बलबीर सिंह सीनियर ने भारतीय हॉकी टीम का नेतृत्व किया था.
वो 1975 में विश्व प जीतने वाली टीम के कोच थे साथ ही उन्हीं के कोच रहते हुए हुए टीम ने 1971 का विश्व कप में कांस्य पदक जीता था. 1957 में में उन्हें पद्मश्री मिला था.
