“What’s in a name”? Is it the Plum Pudding or the Christmas Pudding? Well, the name could always be foxing as you can hardly find any plum in the plum pudding! This customary Christmas dessert from England can truly resemble what the ‘Bard of Avon’ William Shakespeare meant in his Romeo and Juliet – more than a name, it is the quality that matters most. The history of Plum Pudding dates back to 13th century when it had a different name, taste and consistency. Traversing time and tables, this humble pudding turned sweet from savoury. In the 17th century, the same plum pudding was christened as the Christmas Pudding in the British Royal kitchen and since then, it hasn't looked back. The 18th century witnessed its soaring popularity and was lovingly called the Plum Pudding, though not made of plums. Food historians feel, the popularity of dried plums or prunes during the Victorian-era was such that any dessert made of dried fruits were called plum cakes or plum puddings. Changing times have brought many changes in the Christmas menu, but this royal favourite never lost its appeal. Steeped in tradition, the Plum Pudding is a must have at the dinner table of any Christian household. We too choose to start our Christmas Special Recipe series with this traditional desert.
