Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora on Wednesday appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to convene an all-party meeting over the Assam-Mizoram border conflict.

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora on Wednesday appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to convene an all-party meeting over the Assam-Mizoram border conflict. Highlighting that the border disputes of Assam-Mizoram have reached a volatile stage, Bora said that if the tension is not resolved immediately with a positive political response to the matters related to the border disputes, the situation in both the States may go from bad to worst with its adverse impact in other northeastern states.

"I urge you to urgently call a meeting of both the Chief Ministers of the two states and all the political parties of the northeast including national, regional, and local political parties with other stakeholders in the presence of the Prime Minister so that a permanent solution can be availed. It is high time to avoid vested political interest for the greater public interest of the people," said Bora in his letter written to Home Minister Shah.

Meanwhile, a scheduled meeting between the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga scheduled for Thursday has reportedly been cancelled. The meeting was called following the gruesome border conflict between the two states. The meeting was supposed to be chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at North Block.

On Wednesday, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla held two rounds of meetings with the Assam and Mizoram Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in New Delhi. Bhalla set for two separate rounds of meeting with Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and DGP SBK Singh followed by a meeting with Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. After the meeting, Mizoram Chief Secretary said that the meeting took place in a positive direction. Till the filing of this report, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla is taking a joint meeting of the Assam and Mizoram government officials at North Block.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Home Ministry said that boundary disputes are arising out of the demarcation of boundaries and claims and counterclaims over territories between Haryana-Himachal Pradesh, UT of Ladakh-Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra-Karnataka, Assam-Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Nagaland, Assam-Meghalaya and Assam-Mizoram.

"Occasional protests and incidents of violence are reported from some of the disputed border areas. The approach of the Central government has consistently been that inter-state disputes can be resolved only with the cooperation of the state governments concerned and that the Central government acts only as a facilitator for amicable settlement of the dispute in the spirit of mutual understanding," said Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai in the Parliament on Tuesday.
