Dehradun: Preparations for the Indian Military Academy's (IMA) passing out parade, to be held on December 12, are underway as gentlemen cadets and officers leaving no stone unturned to ensure an impressive show.

In previous passing out parade held in June last, parents and relatives of the cadets were not allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time around, however, the kin of the cadets will be attending the ceremony.

The army band, which helps every soldier and officer, since the time of him joining the army to their last breath, is expected to present a wonderful show during the much-awaited ceremony.

'Tu sher-e hind agge chal, marne se kabhi na dar' (You are a lion of India. You would have to move ahead and don't be afraid of getting killed in action) is the inspiring tune which keeps the soldiers and the officers going in all situation.

Indian army has over 50 brass bands, which play instruments like trumpet, clarinet, trombone, saxophone, flute and cymbals, apart from bugle and drums. It has 400 pipe bands as well.

The bands regularly participate celebrations dedicated to various national events. These bands are also permanent participants in the Republic Day parade every year.

They inspire the security forces in difficult times and make them proud of their being part of the defence forces. All cades and officers are introduced to these bands before they pass out of the IMA.

The history of the Indian army's bands has its roots in the British military. The Indian military bands consist of musicians from the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.

Their tunes are based on folk songs and stories. The Indianisation of the band began when the British rule over the country ended. The first Indian Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, confronted the challenge and laid down the foundation of the Military School of Music in Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, in 1950.

Every six months, the IMA organises a passing out parade for its cadets who join different arms and services of the Indian Army while the foreign cadets go onto join the armies in their respective countries.
