Maharashtra Home department has transferred an extortion case registered by Thane Police against former Mumbai top cop Param Bir Singh to the state Criminal Investigation Department. This is the third case against Singh taken over by the CID wing of the state police.

Mumbai: The extortion case registered by Thane police against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and seven others has been transferred for further investigation to the state Criminal Investigation Department.

The FIR was registered at the Kopri Police Station in Thane city on July 23. Along with Param Bir Singh, the FIR also names DCP Parag Manere, builder Sanjay Punamia, businessman Sunil Jain and one Manoj Ghatkar and three other police officers. The former top cop is currently facing four FIRs for alleged extortion.

This is the third case against Singh to be probed by the CID wing. Earlier in August, the extortion case registered by Marine Drive Police against Singh and eight others was transferred to the CID. The complaints of extortion lodged by alleged cricket bookies Sonu Jalan and Ketan Tanna against the IPS officer are also being probed by the special wing of the state police.

According to the latest reports, the state Home Department has sought more details on a proposal sent by Maharashtra Director General of Police Sanjay Pandey seeking suspension of Singh and other police officials named in alleged extortion cases.

On September 22, state government-appointed Chandiwala judicial commission re-issued the bailable warrant against Singh, who is now Commandant General of Home Guards, after he failed to appear before it. The panel has again summoned Singh on October 6 to give evidence, failing which the IPS officer could face a non-bailable arrest warrant.

Singh was removed from the post of Mumbai police commissioner soon after the arrest of former police officer Sachin Waze by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in March this year in connection with the case of an explosives-laden vehicle found near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai. Just days after his transfer, Singh levelled corruption allegations against Anil Deshmukh following which the latter resigned as Home Minister.
