This municipality has attempted to produce oil from plastic waste, the basic idea behind which is making the city single-use-plastic free.

On one hand, excessive plastic waste generation has become a global concern, on the other hand, only five per cent of this waste is recycled daily. This indicates that with each passing second, plastic is becoming a bigger and more vulnerable problem for the earth.

Petlad Municipality has made an effort to reduce the consumption of low quality plastic in their district.

Volunteers from the Municipality go door-to-door and collect plastic waste from every household which is further classified into dry and wet waste categories.

Next to the dumping site where all the waste is dumped, a plastic pyrolysis plant has been set which helps convert this waste into usable oil.

This oil is further used by the municipality to run low-speed diesel engines and generate financial sales.

At times when the plant is under maintenance, the collected plastic waste is handed over by the Municipality to a different organisation.

In return for this waste, the organisation provides the Municipality with decorative items and garden sitting equipment.

The Petlad municipality has taken a challenge of efficiently making the city plastic-free while also being cost-effective and generating a productive result out of it.
